Intro to the Metal Miller - part 2
A look into the more complex milling techniques and using them to machine a pair of wheel spacers.
Service Description
As the name suggests, this is the follow on from 'Intro to the Metal Mill'. However, this could also be a refresher Skills class for you, if you feel you need to brush up some existing metal milling skills. We’ll be machining a pair of 10mm universal wheel spacers, based on the Ford 4 x 108 and VW 5 x 112 (may well fit others, and will give you the idea of how to adapt for your own project). Before we get on to machining our spacers, we’ll go through some of the more complex milling techniques. We don’t just want you able to churn out wheel spacers, but also to give you the understanding to go way beyond that! We'll start with how to use the digital read-out (DRO) to drill multiple holes, both in straight lines and on a pitched circle diameter (PCD); and how to use the DRO to cut slots and pockets bigger than the cutter being used. Next, we'll look at how to set up the rotary table, and how to cut radial slots. Along the way in this class, we will look at cutter choice and spindle speed, depth of cut, feed rates, and cutter engagement. Once we’ve reviewed the techniques, we’ll get on with actually cutting some metal! The wheel spacers will already have a 64mm diameter hole up the middle, and we’ll use this to mount the spacer. Once the spacer is mounted up and made flat, we’ll use the aforementioned techniques to get the spacers machined up, starting with centre drilling, then slotting. Wider stance here we come!
