Intro to the Metal Miller

A skills class for the basics of metal milling

3 hr 30 min
250 British pounds
Dream machine Workshop @ The Pleck, B50 4BB

Service Description

In this 3.5 hour class, we will introduce you to the basics of the Metal Miller. We start with a short safety briefing, then move on to the startup and shutdown of the machine, engaging / disengaging drive, and the emergency stop. Then we cover how to move the table of the machine, so we can get the vice true to the table, and how to chuck the workpiece. In doing this we’ll also learn how to read the increments on the turning handles. Once the vice is true, we'll select a cutter, learn how to mount it in the machine spindle, and how to select the spindle speed appropriate for the cutter and material used. Once this is done, we can cut some metal! The first cuts of any job are facing off the workpiece to make it square. That’s what we cover next, as well as how much material we can remove per cut. Now our workpiece is square, we can cut a slot, and discuss the considerations when doing this: the cutter required, spindle speed and depth of cut. In the final part of this intro course, we’ll look at drilling and tapping.
